US Social Media Influencer Penalized Following Mass Electric Bike Gathering on Iconic Australian Bridge

New South Wales police have issued a fine against an American social media personality and served two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation following a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on Tuesday.

The Incident: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of around 40 individuals riding e-bikes and motorcycles travelled along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and rode through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"There was potential for serious injury or fatalities," stated a senior police official David Driver on Wednesday.

Police indicated they did not immediately pursue the group out of safety concerns but rather found the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Fines Imposed for Influencer

Later in the week, authorities announced they had issued the American online personality who goes by Sur Ronster, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), with a penalty of $562 and penalty points per notice, in relation to the bridge ride-out. They added that inquiries were continuing.

The influencer reportedly has over 3.4 million subscribers on YouTube and over 1.2 million on the social media app.

Influencer's Comments

The content creator gave comments to a local publication this week after the incident spread rapidly on news sites and social media, saying he was sorry for giving "the biking community" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to come here respecting the rules and standards of the city. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to greet people under the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had a decision to make: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we turn around, essentially, before entering the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to go back."

Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules

The increase of electric bicycles on roads nationwide has prompted increasing demands for regulation. The federal health minister, the minister, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Kids have done stupid things on bikes since the invention of the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," the minister stated. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things coming into the country [and] police are granted the powers to crack down, to take them away, to destroy them, to dispose of them."

The state recorded 226 injuries related to ebikes in the previous year. However, in the initial half of the following year, that figure surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
