The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A recent term came to light a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by health professionals like child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to treat a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are ongoing. Officials disputes these allegations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
