Monte Cook and Monte Cook Will Lead Workshops at Dungeon Master University

Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been running deeply engaging experiences where expert DMs manage Dungeons & Dragons games in historic castles in the UK and at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. The comprehensive packages are especially popular among forever DMs who seldom have the opportunity to join in the game themselves, and they often seek advice from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improvisation and creating challenges to managing conflicts at the table.

In response, the coordinators began designing a organized method to tackle these topics, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The debut workshop is planned for the start of 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“You can watch numerous digital guides on any topic and learn quite a lot, but the idea was that nothing compares to face-to-face interaction alongside peers in game mastering, where direct communication with seasoned educators and other game masters often in comparable situations and also want to improve their skills,” stated the program's dean.

Course Offerings and Ticket Packages

DMs can select packages ranging from $995 to $2,500, depending on the amount of contact they desire with the experts. The base tier includes one of four courses:

  • Foundational Skills: Teaches the basics of running D&D.
  • Story Arc Development: Focuses around designing extended campaigns.
  • Universe Design: Concentrates on the development of worlds.
  • Industry Advancement: Tailored to game masters who aim to explore more about the roleplaying business.

Each course includes eight hours of training split over two days.

“The workshops are designed so that you walk away with usable skills, probably greater confidence, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl said. “They’re not just lectures and they go beyond recorded content. These workshops that you can attend, gain knowledge from, and then go right back home the week after and apply in your regular session.”

Professional Teachers

Many sessions are instructed by a pair of experts. Universe creation is guided by an industry veteran and the creator of Eberron, both teaching the craft of setting creation.

Career building presents several experts, such as a puzzle design specialist, a podcast co-host, and Hunter Fell. The expanded teaching staff is intended to offer targeted guidance to students with definite objectives.

“Various attendees plan to create their own real-play series and display their adventures with the world, some of them aim to release and write original content,” Carl said. “Some just want to ask, What does it take to be a DM at a program like D&D in a Castle? Which abilities that I need? Is it for everyone?

Premium Packages

A $1.5K gold tier includes access to a opening gathering, a starter kit, and a brief one-on-one appointment with an instructor. This marks the debut of the program, though the team has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their premium gatherings.

“You could almost run an entire weekend just on office hours for expert DMs,” Carl mentioned. “It's unclear if that’s the most effective utilization of everybody’s time – In my opinion the structured learning and the practical exercises is extremely important – but I believe it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”

The twenty-five hundred dollar platinum tier includes an extended personal consultation and the chance to lead a session for a small group plus a teacher, who will then provide notes and instruction.

“The aim is for the teacher to evaluate whatever the DM is focused on: I struggle with improv or I feel stuck in specific fight encounters. May I present a scenario for you and get feedback on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl said. “Alternatively they want to obtain critique and guidance on a particular setting that they’ve been building.”

Next Steps

Responses from the inaugural session will help determine subsequent DMU events. Carl suggested that potential adjustments could include adding more office hours, making it longer to 72 hours, or trying out different seminar structures.

“I expect that we conduct these very often,” Carl said. “I truly hope to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a given year, in various locations, and in various nations. The reception has been really terrific. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I feel it would be wonderful to be able to conduct this in conjunction with big conventions.”
