Lost Johann Sebastian Bach Compositions Played for First-Ever Performance in Three Centuries

Historical organ composition
Bach is believed to have composed the two compositions at the start of his musical journey

Recently identified organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach have been unveiled and played in the European nation for the first time in 320 years.

The country's Cultural Affairs Minister the cultural official called the discovery of the pair of works a "great moment for the musical community".

They initially attracted notice of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was documenting historical musical documents at the Royal Library of Belgium.

The organ works - the D minor Chaconne and Chaconne in G minor - were undated and anonymous. The researcher spent the next 30 years working to verify the authorship of the pieces.

Memorable Concert

They were played at the St Thomas Church in Leipzig, where the composer is buried and where he worked as a church musician for over two decades.

The two pieces were performed by organist from the Netherlands the musical performer, who said he was honored to be able to play them for the first time in over three centuries.

He said the works were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "an important addition for modern musicians, as they are also appropriate for smaller organs".

Cultural Relevance

They are thought to have been composed during Bach's formative years, when he was employed as an music instructor in the municipality of Arnstadt in Thuringia.

The scholar, who is now the director of the Bach research center in the city, said they displayed several characteristics unique to the musical genius.

"Musically, the pieces also contain elements that can be found in Bach's works from that time, but not in those of different artists," he said.

They are considered to have been transcribed in 1705 by Bach's apprentice, the musical student.

At a unveiling of the works, Mr Wollny said he was "almost completely confident that Bach had written the two pieces" and they have now been added into the official catalogue of his works.
