Jennifer Lawrence Says Discussing Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ Tearing the Country Apart

Lawrence has expressed that she no longer feels fitting to speak out regarding the Trump administration, worried it could intensify unhelpful debate and deepen rifts across the nation.

‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says Lawrence

Speaking with media, she reflected, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I felt like I was moving hastily in a panicked state. But it’s become clear, election after election, public figures do not make a difference at all on electoral choices.”

Lawrence added, “So then what am I doing? I’m just expressing personal views on an issue that’s going to add fuel to a fire dividing the nation apart.”

Shifting Views

The actress has previously been open about backing Republican and Democratic presidential nominees over the years. Raised by conservative Republicans in Kentucky, she voted for the Republican nominee in 2008 then moving to the left-leaning politics and revealing she realized during President Obama’s term that supporting the GOP was undermining her personal freedoms as a female citizen.

Previous Comments

In 2015, she remarked that Trump winning the presidency could represent “a catastrophic event” and endorsed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. More recently, she voiced her backing to the Democratic nominee, “because I feel she’s an amazing candidate and I am confident that she will do whatever she can to safeguard abortion access.”

Hollywood’s Stance

The star was joined by most of Hollywood in her disapproval of Trump as a returning figure, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the electoral decisions was highlighted by the outcome.

“This upcoming term feels different,” noted she regarding his administration. “Since he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for his first term. He was transparent. And voters made that decision.”

Latest Film

Lawrence is discussing Die, My Love, the filmmaker’s project in which she plays a recent parent who faces challenges with her emotional state in the countryside. Speaking at a press conference for the movie in Venice, she commented on the conflict in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s mortifying. What’s happening is nothing short of a genocide and it’s horrible.”

Broader Concerns

Lawrence added by saying that she was disheartened by “the hostility in the discussions of American politics right now and how that is going to be normalised to the children today. It’s going to be normal to them that elected officials deceive.”

She attempted to refocus anger about the issue to policymakers rather than entertainers. “Keep attention on those accountable,” she remarked, in what many took to be a reference to the recent commitment supported by more than 4,000 arts community members to refuse engagement with Israeli film institutions.

Relatable Experiences

Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim aged 22 for her part in Silver Linings Playbook, is attracting awards attention for her performance in the new film. While the director has denied the plot being interpreted as one of post-birth struggles and psychosis, the actress revealed that she identified with elements of her role’s experience after the birth of her new baby, not long after production wrapped.

“It was fear about my child,” she commented, “imagining every potential danger, and then questioning everything that I was trying. I was seeing a therapist, but I started taking a treatment called the prescription and I used it for 14 days and it really helped.”

Professional Experiences

Lawrence also mentioned about the freeing requirement of completing nude scenes in the film while she was in pregnancy and limited physically.

“It’s refreshing,” she commented, regarding the need to set aside self-consciousness. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
